Winair - How does Nevis shape your artistic vision ?

Vaughn Anslyn - Nevis is a beautiful place. Everywhere I look, the island feels like a postcard. But it goes much further than landscapes and seascapes. The marine life, the birds, goats, donkeys and monkeys are all willing subjects. Then there is the history. Sugar plantation ruins dot the island, making me feel a deep responsibility to preserve this history.

Winair - As a self-taught artist working across different styles, how do you express Nevis through your work ?

VA - As a self-taught artist, I represent the island by translating its vibrant culture and historical charm through a blend of styles. From realistic paintings and sketches of its people to the vibrant colors and rich textures of abstract art, I capture the shifting blues of Pinney’s Beach and the lush greens of Nevis Peak.

Winair - What role do you want your art to play for both locals and visitors?

VA - My art is a cultural bridge, fostering pride among locals while offering visitors an authentic, immersive storytelling experience. It transforms public spaces into vibrant, memorable photographic hubs that celebrate our unique identity. I see my work as visual storytelling : I share the inspiration behind each piece, rooted in Nevisian themes, to build an emotional connection with an international audience. Through the faces of the people, the beauty of our scenery, and the richness of our culture, I express these stories across a range of surfaces, including canvas, paper, concrete, and stone.

Winair - How do you stay connected to Nevis while reaching an international audience ?

VA - Staying connected to Nevis while reaching an international audience requires a hybrid approach. Building a strong digital presence on social media, combined with targeted networking, helps my work gain recognition. Nevis is home, but with a population of around 12,000, the local audience for art remains limited. The internet has made it possible to share my work globally in ways that were unimaginable when I was younger.
