LES UNIVERS MULTIPLES DE YESWOO DINI…

Yeswoo DINI is a prolific graffiti artist whose murals are scattered throughout Guadeloupe and far beyond. In a solo show at the Arawak Hotel in Gosier last June, he offered an immersion into his "Multiverse," the title and theme of the exhibition. OnAir was there. Yeswoo Dini is a graffiti artist at heart. Originally from Rennes, he arrived in Guadeloupe in 2003 and has been tirelessly beautifying the walls of public and private spaces with his spray cans ever since. A portrait artist, his giant, realistic figures have become iconic symbols of the local landscape over the past two decades. Initially determined to celebrate Caribbean women, he produced his "Yes Soul Sista" series at an impressive pace, wherever walls were large enough to accommodate his vision. Possessing a remarkable ability to reinvent himself, Yeswoo later explored Cubism, subtly blending it with his realistic techniques. The graphic quality of these works, rendered in flat colors, contrasts with carefully controlled gradations that aim to capture the interplay of light and shadow. Alongside this "cubist realism" as he likes to call it, we can identify several works whose treatment seems to evoke, always on spectacular formats, the sketched lines of comic book artists such as Bilal, Moebius, Rosinski, Frazetta or Kim Jung-Gi, of whom he is a fervent admirer. Another series that has been very prominent in recent years is the one dedicated to Native American peoples, a subject that fascinates him for both its historical and aesthetic dimensions. He even dedicated a mural to Carloman Bassette, a Guadeloupean specialist in Native American history, shortly after his death in August 2021. Known and recognized for his outdoor work, his recent solo exhibition at the Arawak Hotel in Gosier allowed him to present more intimate pieces, linked to the themes mentioned above and to other avenues of research he has been exploring for many years. The exhibition, divided into several universes constituting his "Multiverse," offered the opportunity to wander from one period to another in the artist's life and to discover works in small and large formats, using a variety of media: charcoal, acrylic paint, spray paint, recycled materials, and other sculptural techniques.
