Shooting Hoops With Winair

Dribble. Fake. Shoot. A two-pointer right into the basket as Winair’s corporate team took to the court for the second annual Business Hoops SXM Tournament, whose latest edition took place from  January 28 through February 7, 2026 at the L.B. Scott Sports Auditorium in Philipsburg, St. Maarten. Not only do business-affiliated teams from across the island try to bring home top honors, but the event evokes the kind of teamwork, sports rivalry, workplace pride, and community engagement that Winair represents as a sponsor of the tournament, which has expanded to include 12 teams that competed over 10 days. The all-men’s Winair team – all but three of the current players work for the airline – competes against such rivals as the St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC), the Fire Department (Airport), and the Government of Sint Maarten. “The team brings together a group of talented players from different backgrounds who unite for the competition,” says Addisson Boston, Winair’s Manager of Ramp Services, who has worked at the airline for the past 10 years. “The coach and players work together primarily during the tournament period. The tournament lasts for two weeks, running from the last week of January into the first week of February. The team plays specifically for this event rather than in a formal league,” he adds, noting that he is the team’s current coach, and used to be a player as well. “The team has been quite competitive, reaching the semi- finals twice. Although they have not yet won the tournament, their performances have shown strong potential and consistency,” adds Addisson Boston, pointing out that the Winair team made it to the quarter finals in 2026. “The most interesting thing about the team is how a randomly assembled group of talented players can come together and achieve success despite having very little practice time together.”
